Photo Challenge: Komorebi, or Dappled Light

Komorebi is a Japanese word, meaning the scattered, dappled light effect when sunlight shines through tree leaves.  We have quite a bit of experience with this concept in Michigan.

It is a beautiful effect. I remember that from being raised in the north country where the trees, mostly white poplar or quaking aspen, black poplar and scattered willows, alder and birches would throw such light on paths because up there the foliage is much thinner, allowing more sunlight to pass through, than down here in the rain forest. Forest paths here are just plain dark, like walking through tunnels. Unless of course you make it up into the higher mountains, then the foliage thins again. Thanks for the pretty images.

Funny you should mention rain forest. I remember a few years back going to New Mexico for a week’s vaca. When I got back (late May), the local woods seemed positively Amazonian by comparison.

For dappled light mavens, the Midwest is the place–all those deciduous trees. And the Japanese have another expression–shinrin-yoku, which means literally forest bathing. Very therapeutic, I’ve found. 🙂

Both of my parents grew up in Michigan and had family there so I believe I have been to every tiny town in Michigan has to offer :-). And my mother was a huge nature lover and birdwatcher. But I think you have managed to find the one forest preserve I have not visited :-).

Fortunately, Hartwick Pines is only about 10 miles off the beaten path, aka I-75. So, I can visit on a summer weekend. The pines being so tall, there’s kind of a hushed forest cathedral effect. My grandparents took me there back in boyhood days, so there are memories with Hartwick. And for those 3 day weekends, it’s only about an hour or so south of the Mackinac Bridge. Bonus!
