How long can a single, tenacious pine tree last against the odds? Perhaps I will discover the answer during a re-visit this summer.

Thanks very much! This entire wilderness area is a special place that I only found a couple years ago, although I’ve lived in this state for many years.

Thank you. I love this spot. Better yet, it’s only about a 4 hour drive. Perfect for summer weekends!

If there’s no lengthy flooding to weaken the root anchoring it may continue to grow that way for its entire life. I see that it’s already beginning to turn up at the top. It’s not giving up.

The soil in that part of Michigan is pretty thin and sandy to begin with. We shall see.

You would think it would just fall into the river. But, not yet. Stay tuned.

I will be watching this space for updates but I fear the tree will outlast me!

I’ve seen many trees in Wyoming like this and they remain year after year. Amazing.

Thanks, Piyumi. This is a semi-wilderness I first visited a few years ago. Now, it’s a regular summer visit. A beautiful, crystal-clear river in the pines.

I suspect this pine tree will become a bridge in the not too-distant future.

Hi Tom! Nature, politics and spirit, really interesting composition. I love this juxtapositional feature of your post. And the fact that I learned this adjective while searching for the word to describe what I felt while seeing your contribution 🙂 Thank you.

It is that. The river runs through the Pigeon River state forest, which is a semi-wilderness area in northern Michigan. I visit there annually or maybe twice or thrice. 🙂
